How to stop a cat's diarrhea?

You are very worried because you have noticed that your cat has more frequent bowel movements, very liquid and with a very bad smell ? There is no doubt: It is indeed a diarrhea. So, just like me the first time Mistee did the blow to me, you are terribly distressed, especially if your cat is only a few months old ...

So let's be clear: I am not a veterinarian or a specialist in cat health. However, I have been able to experience a few difficult situations with my cat Mistee and as such I am simply sharing my knowledge and advice from my vet. However, if your cat has diarrhea, her vet will be more competent at diagnosing a health problem.

But to help you overcome this concern, I will try to answer the questions you have:

  • What can be the causes of my cat's diarrhea ?
  • When should I be concerned about my cat's diarrhea?
  • La can diarrhea be dangerous for a cat, for a kitten ?
  • How stop a cat's diarrhea ?
  • What treatment for cat diarrhea ?

Causes of a cat's diarrhea

La cat diarrhea is one of the consequences of certain digestive disorders, diseases or infections: Pathologies of the liver, pancreas, food allergies, viral or bacterial infections, chronic inflammation of the intestine, digestive tract, intestinal obstruction, etc.

A change in diet or a food allergy could be the cause of your cat's diarrhea. So, make sure your neighbors do not feed your cat when he goes home.

On the intoxication side, check your property and those of your neighbors to see if there are any toxic plants that your cat could have eaten. See on the internet or ask your veterinarian for a list of plants toxic to cats.

Finally, diarrhea can also be caused by stress. Indeed, stress can influence a cat's intestinal transit. A change in its habitat, a move or the arrival of another animal in its home are all situations that make a cat anxious or even anxious. Sometimes, it is this discomfort that generates diarrhea.

When to worry about diarrhea in a cat

Kitten diarrhea

Your kitten has diarrhea ? So, don't try to treat him yourself, don't wait and get him to his vet quickly. Indeed, if a kitten has diarrhea, it is better to worry about it right away because, much more fragile than an adult cat, it risks dehydrating very very quickly. In addition, her immune system may not be strong enough to fight diarrhea if it is acute.

Adult cat diarrhea

If your cat has diarrhea, it will take time to observe it on a daily basis. If you notice that your cat looks dejected, it seems have fever, that he seems to have a stomach ache, that there is blood in his stool, or if his diarrhea does not get better after 2 days, it seems that your cat has lost weight, so don't wait and quickly show it to a vet.

Is diarrhea dangerous in a cat?

Apart from the symptoms listed above, generally diarrhea in cats are not serious and disappear within 2 to 3 days at most. They are often the result of a small digestive disorder (overeating, change of kibble, allergy to a food…) which can be easily and quickly resolved thanks to an adapted diet and / or a small complementary treatment.

The only risk that could become serious is the dehydration. That's why, when a cat has diarrhea, you have to think about him give your cat a drink as often as possible.

How to stop cat diarrhea?

If you suspect that your cat's diarrhea may be related to the presence of internal parasites, you should deworm your cat.

Prevention of diarrhea in cats

Deworming is a preventive treatment that it is best to administer to your cat from the age of six months. An adult cat should be dewormed 2 to 3 times a year.

Diet and diet

If it's dietary or digestive-related diarrhea, you will need to put your cat on a diet for 24 hours (no food at all but plenty of water). Then you can offer him "diet" meals to give him 3 or 4 times a day in small portions. You will have to mix very cooked white rice with the cooking water, pumpkin and boiled chicken breast. After 48 hours, if you have noticed improvement, you should gradually reintroduce your old diet by mixing regular diet and regular food.

But if, after 48 hours of diet, the diarrhea has not diminished, then your cat will have to be taken for the advice of his veterinarian and, if necessary, suitable treatment.

probiotics

We can rebalance the digestive system and intestinal transit of a cat with a food supplement based on probiotics. In fact, probiotics enrich the intestinal flora with good bacteria and thus promote the reestablishment of a balance after diarrhea.. Here's the one I found on Amazon:

Smecta cat diarrhea?

In addition to the diet, some give Smecta to their cat because it is an intestinal plaster that is effective in case of strong diarrhea.

However, I personally never gave it to my cat. In addition, it is recommended to use a product suitable for cats. The Smectite is the equivalent of Smecta but special for cats. Thus, in many cases, it can be combined with a diet to treat your cat (see veterinarian opinion)!

Chronic cat diarrhea - What diet?

A balanced diet rich in fiber and designed for cats with digestive, gastric or intestinal problems plays an essential role in the health of your cat. Here is a mark of Recommended kibble for cats who have (recurrently) this type of problem:
