Fighting Kittens - Why Do Kittens Bite Each Other?

You don't know why and how to stop your fighting kittens? You don't understand why kittens bite each other.

Here is some information that will help you understand the behavior of fighting kittens and how to react.

Kittens fighting or playing?

When they are all young, one can wonder if the kittens really fight or if they play with each other. Indeed, it is very common to see young kittens fighting, chasing each other, kicking each other without being violent or aggressive and rather in a playful way.

Often, brawling is a well-controlled game where the kittens alternately play the role of prey and hunter. In young kittens, it is a way of socializing but also of exercising their hunting instinct in the form of games.

In fact, they play and don't really fight because otherwise there would be threatening growls, spits and meows.

Fighting or playing kittens - how do you know?

Kittens biting each other

Without really fighting, the young kittens bite each other. Don't worry, this is normal behavior. Indeed, this is how kittens communicate with each other and create bonds of affection. In fact, they don't bite each other but gently bite their neck, paws or tail.

Growing up, kittens (especially males) tend to fight more violently, to behave more aggressively towards other kittens. What were just games when they were 2, 3 or 4 months old can turn into real fights when kittens over 6 months old fight with each other.

When that starts to happen, then you have to react. Indeed, it is easier to change the behavior of cats when they are all young than to do so when they are already adults.

What to do to make the kittens stop fighting all the time?

As kittens grow older they start to behave like adult cats. Often, the causes of conflicts between kittens are related to the control of their food and their environment. These are often territorial conflicts.

In this case, before trying to separate them, make sure to give them their own territory. For this, when possible, it is necessary to avoid that all the kittens share the same bowl or the same litter.

  • Place several cushions, litter boxes, food bowls in different places of the house so that each kitten makes its own territory.
  • Set up several scratching posts or cat trees.
  • Leave many kittens toys to distract them.

How to separate kittens that are fighting?

When fights are too frequent and violent, kittens can injure themselves and develop a habit of being aggressive. They absolutely must stop this attack behavior.

During combat, especially do not try to hit them or separate them with a broomstick, shovel or other object.

As soon as you hear hissing, shrill meowing, seeing signs of attacks, use a spray bottle to send jets of water on the kittens' faces and shouting a big NO !!! Then you have to separate them and isolate them.

If you use this spray method at the start of each fight, the kittens will have their attention diverted and gradually they will stop fighting with each other.

Making noise by clapping your hands, a pot, or using a whistle can also be effective in distracting kittens and stopping the fight.

In fact, it is through a good positive education that your kittens will grow up well socialized and without having overly aggressive behavior problems. See how to train a kitten in 15 minutes a day.
