my cat attacks me for no reason WHAT TO DO

Why is my cat attacking me for no reason?

Although it may sound alarming, the problem of a cat attacking can easily resolve itself once the underlying reason is identified. This is why it is essential to understand why your cat attacks you.

Here are the main causes that explain why a cat attacks for no apparent reason:

Cat attacking his master

A cat never attacks its owner for no reason. In fact, if you find that your cat is increasingly aggressive towards you, it may indicate a health concern such as a dysfunction of his nervous system or hyperthyroidism.

So, before anything else, it will be best to show your cat to his vet so that he can check if his aggressive behavior is not related to a medical problem.

Cat attacking the feet

Your cat attacks you feet, legs, ankles: It is surely because of his predatory instinct.

In fact cats in the wild were predators. They had to hunt for food. However, even if cats have become "domestic", they still retain their predatory instincts. If your cat is attacking you for no apparent reason, it may be because he sees you as prey when his hunting instinct kicks in.

Cat attacking hands

If your cat attacks your hands for no reason, it may be that she has developed a bad habit. In fact, when a kitten is separated from its mother too soon, it doesn't learn to stop nibbling. However, if nobody prevents him from continuing, then this behavior can degenerate when he grows up and becomes habitual.

Kicking cat

  • If your cat is kicking you, it's probably because he's bored or doesn't have enough toys. In fact, since he doesn't know how to occupy himself, he then tries to interact with you. He will then suddenly pass in front of you, give you a kick or jump on you when you are on the sofa ...
  • Another reason a cat can paw is because it wants to send you a message. Indeed, if you forgot to give him kibble, water or change his litter box… your cat cannot tell you by voice, then he gives you a paw. This can mean that he is thirsty, that it is his time to eat, that he wants to go out ...

Cat biting for no reason

If your cat is biting your hands, legs, or arms for no reason, it may be because she smelled something on you that she is afraid of or is making her anxious.

In fact, cats are very sensitive to smells and a simple odor unknown to the cat can trigger anxiety or fear. But fear is a feeling that makes cats aggressive.

If you have a scent that frightens your cat, he will bite precisely where this particular scent is found and therefore on your hand, your leg, your arm ...

But your cat can also bite you because she got used to it since she was a kitten. See How to stop a kitten from biting?

My cat attacks me after a hug

Usually a cat likes to be petted, but there are times when it can be too much for him, when he decides he doesn't want it anymore. Normally, he should let you know that he wants to be quiet and that he doesn't feel like cuddling anymore. But if you don't notice this, then it can attack your hand, bite you or even scratch you.

My cat attacks me when I scold him

In fact, a lot of times a cat doesn't understand why you are scolding them. But since cats have a very good memory, if you reprimand your cat you will frighten them and they may develop fear and mistrust of you over time. Suddenly, by scolding him, you may make him even more aggressive towards you.

See my article: How to punish an attacking cat?

My cat attacks me when I sleep

If your cat attacks you at night while you are sleeping, it is because he is because of his predatory instincts. Indeed, in the wild, cats hunted for food, especially at night. Since cats are pets, they no longer need to hunt but they have retained this instinct which is particularly evident during the night. The best will be to do everything so that he falls asleep at night so that he does not attack you and that don't meow at night. See my article: How to put a cat to sleep

My cat jumps on me

Are you quietly installed on your sofa, sitting on your bed or lying down and suddenly your cat jumps on you?

In this case, your simply wants to play with you and thus seeks your attention. In fact, it has designated you as a playmate, it stalks you as a target, and pounces on you without any prior warning and with no sign of aggression (no hissing, spitting or growling).

My cat is scratching me

If your cat is scratching you while you are holding it in your lap, petting it, or handling it, it is most likely pain-induced aggression.

A cat can be aggressive when it suffers from chronic or localized pain. However, by handling it, you can trigger pain and your cat reacts as best he can by scratching or biting. (See My cat scratches me for no reason)

My cat spits on me for no reason

The "growl" is a natural phenomenon in cats which thus expresses a caution. Often the cat "spits" to ask to be left alone, not to bother him.

But if your cat spits on you without you having done anything, so for no reason, it is that he is in mental pain or that he is ill (see my article: How do you know if a cat is sick?).

My cat attacks me suddenly

Whatever the type of attack, if your cat attacks you suddenly for no reason it may be because he feels threatened, afraid or anxious and it is the only way for him to express his pain. be. In this case, it's up to you to find what bothers or disturbs him (moving, presence of another animal in his environment, lack of attention on your part…).

Finally, it may be that your cat is bored. In this case, encourage him to play. And if you are working and you don't have enough time to play with him, here are some tips for him to be active while you are away:

  • hide lots of toys in your house,
  • leave him a kong for cat filled with treats,
  • turn on the television on a channel showing shows about animals,
  • give him interactive toys to stimulate him to play on his own.

Here is one of the best interactive toys cats love! This is a fish toy that will move like a real fish when your cat touches it.

My cat attacks me for no reason - When to be alarmed?

There are different levels of severity when a cat attacks you. Here are a few signs of cat body language that you should be aware of:

  • When your cat spits, growls or hisses;
  • When your angry cat meows :
  • When your cat looks you in the face while walking;
  • When your cat's tail is pointing down, not curved down;
  • When your cat's ears are squared up and his back is rounded;
  • When your cat ruffles his hair.

My cat attacks me for no reason - What to do?

Keep your cool, your self-control and be patient. As soon as the cause and the triggers of his aggressiveness are identified, you can do everything to correct them.

Here is what I advise you to do to stop your cat from attacking you for no reason:

  • When your cat is in the act of attacking, you will have to tell him firmly (without shouting) "NO" in an authoritative tone and keep him away from you. As soon as it starts again, you will say NO again and push it back and so on. By associating NO with his attack and by repeating NO and isolation following his attack, your cat will understand that his behavior is not good and that he should not do it again.
  • Organize regular and interactive play sessions with your cat.
  • Give your cat environmental stimulation to keep him occupied physically and mentally (empty boxes, cat tree, perches, ropes, interactive toys…).
  • If you've found that your cat is attacking you in a particular location, try placing a deterrent device in that specific area.
  • If your cat attacks you when playing with you, take breaks.
  • When playing with your cat, never use your hands as toys and react if he bites you. In fact, your cat needs to understand that bites are not part of the game and that they hurt you.

If, despite everything, your cat continues to attack you for no reason, behavioral therapy that can be combined with medical treatment (in some cases) can resolve these behavioral problems and allow you to live peacefully with your cat.

My cat attacks me for no reason - Don'ts

If your cat attacks you, don't hit him, yell at him or punish him. Acting violently against your cat even if it attacks you will only cause fear, anxiety and even more aggressive behavior towards you!

  1. Bonsoir
I read your advice and couldn't find the exact answer.
Generally in the evening I play with my Gertrude (kitty found 4 years ago) for some time the cat cane we play with no longer interests her, it attacks my hands. I manage to make her understand not to scratch but she dies hard enough and when I stop her you hurt her, she leaves and comes back to the charge and meows and hisses.
I try to continue with her toy but it's my hands she wants.
Is it to play with me?
Do you think she wants me?
She's not always good at those times.
Can I just keep going until she gets too upset? Won't that be frustrating?
We live in an apartment with a terrace, she rarely wants to go out, she is greedy and gets bigger.
What can I do in your opinion?
    Thank you very much
    Best wishes

    1. Hello Aurore,
Maybe your Gertrude is getting tired of the cat cane. Does she have something to let off steam (scratching post or cat tree)? Try playing other games with her for a change and watching her reactions.
Whatever the reason for her aggression towards you, it's not revenge, she doesn't blame you. You have to look for what disturbs her (change in her daily environment, change of hours, change of habits, new animal, etc.).
If she consistently attacks your hands, try putting on gloves to see how she'll react.
If she continues to threaten you by spitting and hissing, say loudly and authoritatively: NO! AND isolate her in another room until she calms down.
I hope you will find the solution and that you will be able to spend good times with Gertrude again.
